American Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners

While there are 33 schools offering American style Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree programs in the United States, there is only one school offering degree programs in osteopathic manual practice (OMP) in the US. Since March 2016 the National University of Medical Sciences –USA ( www.numss.us )   registered in Florida, offers a 3 years Bachelor of Science in Osteopathic Manual Practice – BSc (OMP) program as well as 4 years Doctor of Philosophy program in Osteopathic Clinical Sciences – PhD (OCS). NUMSS (USA) is accredited by the US Council on Osteopathic Manual Practice Education ( www.ucompe.org ) and its graduated are eligible to write the board exams of the American Osteopathic Manual Practice Examining Board ( www.aompeb.org ). Those who successfully pass the board exams of AOMPEB can apply to the American Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners to become a full member and a Certified Osteopathic Manual Practitioner (COMP).

American Osteopathic manual practitioners use a variety of hands-on manual treatments. OMPs in US do not perform spinal or peripheral joint manipulation (high velocity low amplitude (HVLA) techniques). They instead offer low force gentle manual therapy.   These include soft tissue techniques, osteo- articular mobilization, cranial osteopathy, visceral manipulation, balance ligamentous tension, facilitated positional release, Still’s technique, manual mechanotherapy, strain/ counterstrain technique, lymphatic drainage, muscle energy techniques, myofascial release technique, trigger point therapy, etc. These techniques are normally employed together with exercise, dietary, and occupational advice in an attempt to help clients recover from pain, disease and injury. American Osteopathic manual practitioners who join the American Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners are awarded the title of COMP: Certified Osteopathic Manual Practitioner. To become certified please apply for a certificate of registration by submitting a completed application form together with a recent colored passport size photo (or scan of one), and the one time applicable fee of US$150 plus US$200 annual membership (total of US$350). The US$350 application and first year membership fee is non-refundable. The following are required to become certified by the American Association of Osteopathic Manual Practitioners: 1.
